I can already hear some of you getting warmed up for the comments, so let me say this. Yes, in social media you can buy advertising. But social media in itself is not advertising. If we can all agree on that, then why are some of us still talking about social media ROI???

You can’t measure relationships. You can’t put on paper the depth and complexity of the human experience with a brand. Sure you can track web traffic, click through rates, and even your follower/following ratio. But none of that explains real influence.

So then why do CEOs, CMOs, and even brand managers insist on this pointless discussion? Because, too many of us have been enchanted by the tools. Too many of us have been caught up in the hype and glory of amazing technology to recognize that social media marketing is essentially the same old ball game using different tools.

Think about it this way, when was the last time you attended a networking event or trade show and had your boss ask you, “so what was your ROI?”. I am willing to bet never, because those types of events aren’t there to act as advertising channels they are there many times to create relationships.

If you utilize offline social events as advertising channels, two things happen. 1) You don’t make any friends. 2) You don’t create any customers. This happens because instead of coming across as the cool girl or guy that everyone wants to do business with, you come across as the annoying jerk passing out postcard adverts. So why is it that some of us think that social media is any different?

Calculating ROI for advertising is easy because it is based on definite variables that can be measured. How do you measure the emotion from a positive exchange with a favorite brand on Twitter? How do you calculate the feelings of community in some forums? You can’t, and you aren’t supposed to.

If your company or client requires social media ROI, then maybe social media isn’t right for you. Or maybe you just need to learn more about being social and come back to the media later.

eMarketer reports on a study conducted by RSW/US which looked at clients’ attitudes towards agency make-up regarding traditional v. digital and found the following:

I love to watch as things come full circle in any aspect of life. Only after each extreme has been found to be lacking do most companies, organizations and just people in general come to rest somewhere between the extremes.

For years now the Internet industry has tried very hard to discredit and in some cases (newspapers for one) set out to destroy old models. In the process, the young upstart Internet types have thumped their chests and claimed superiority over traditional marketing methods.

To be blunt, anyone who is actually stupid enough to believe that the Internet will completely supplant more traditional means of advertising in the coming years is going to learn some hard lessons.

So why am I being so tough on the industry that I work and play in? It’s because there can be too much of a good thing. The Internet’s rise to prominence in the marketing space has been fantastic to say the least but it has also been devoid of logic and reason at times. The cries of making magazines, TV and other more traditional forms of media obsolete have been out of youthful exuberance rather than the dreaded reality word.

Now it’s time for the wise cracking, smart ass Internet marketing crew to come to terms with the idea of holistic marketing. It’s naïve to say that one thing or the other is superior in the marketing ecosystem. The fact is that they all play together and they will for a very long time to come. If the digital only crowd doesn’t come down from its high horse and realize that they may very well find the more traditional agency model coming back to bite them as they get themselves up to digital speed.

Look at how the split occurs when respondents were asked to say what types of agencies would win what types of work.

I would really like to get some more information about that “Other” response. My suspicion is that in an increasingly fast paced and time crunched world many businesses are looking for more ‘one stop shops’ so they don’t have to juggle multiple vendors. I am not saying that it’s a good or bad trend but you would have to figure that it is most desirable to keep vendor management to a minimum.

google logo1 Google and Marketing to the SMBIf you are an SMB owner or marketer and have been in the Internet marketing game for any length of time you know how strange it sounds to consider Google reaching out to you though marketing. It’s a well known frustration regarding Google that having something that has a pulse behind it rather than a blinking light to field questions or concerns or even give some general information often feels more like a matter of fate and chance rather than design. Of course, if you spend enough money in AdWords you may have spoken to someone but that’s another story (that’s called revenue).

Well, take heart because Google is hitting the streets to do something they just aren’t known for: reaching out to prospective customers in the SMB space. I had a conversation with the head of local consumer marketing for Google, Jeff Aguero, and came away encouraged that maybe, just maybe, there will be a human side to Google (which I would accept as a social effort in place of any other products they come up with!).

This push to reach out to businesses at the local level is happening in a variety of ways in several target markets. The markets have been slow rolled over the past few months as follows:

Portland, OR – started early January
Austin, TX – started early February
Las Vegas, NV – started early March
Madison, WI and Charlotte, NC – started at the end of March
San Diego, CA – started in April

Aguero was very personable and forthcoming which pleasantly surprised me since Googlers aren’t known much for their interactions with other human beings. He pointed out that this effort is really in its nascent stage and the company is trying to figure out exactly what works and what doesn’t as it relates to the SMB market. He readily admitted that the diversity of the businesses and the personalities running the businesses makes this effort both extremely rewarding and exciting while at the exact same time a challenge due to the wide range of general knowledge and experience with Google in general.

The three tactics that are used in varying degrees by Google to reach the markets consist of consumer advertising campaigns, representatives or ‘feet on the street’ reaching out to local businesses and, in some cases, community managers who are tasked with engaging with the consumer and creating buzz around Google’s ability to enhance experiences with local businesses through Place Pages and more.

There doesn’t appear to be any ‘silver bullet’ or formula that the effort has unearthed as Aguero pointed out that they are using all three techniques in both Portland and Austin while experimenting with different combinations in other markets.

Google has put together a Google Places Business Kit with various promotional items etc. (more on that at another time). For instance, to get started in Charlotte they mailed 41,000 of these kits to businesses in the Charlotte region. I know a few businesses that received these packages and were at once surprised and curious, to say the least, as to just what Google was up to. Aguero said that a community manager will be up and running in Charlotte over the next few weeks so that will be interesting to watch how the city takes to the interest Google is taking in it.

The ultimate goal of this is education for the SMB. A Google representative confirmed that only 6 million of the 50 million Google Place Pages have been verified in their system. Of course, this accounts for all Places internationally including landmarks etc so we don’t know what percentage of businesses have verified and optimized this very important Google property.

Aquero explained that there are three components to the education of the SMB in this new approach from Google. There are three goals with regard to the SMB that Google touches:

1. Introduce them to and educate them about Google Places and local search in general
2. Claim their Place Page and give them tips about managing that page moving forward
3. Introduce them to and educate them about the NFC (near field communications) window decal that Google would like to see in every merchants’ window across the land.

I joked with Aguero that I suspect most SMB’s might confuse the acronym NFC with the National Football Conference of the NFL. In other words, if the SMB is not tech savvy the terminology itself, let alone its application would be lost on them without real guidance and even then it’s debatable as to how many would truly understand it.

These efforts prove that it’s obvious local is extremely important to Google. Even with the executive shuffling including Marissa Mayer and her new boss, Jeff Huber, Google is committed to making this work. Once more of a ‘formula’ for marketing success is established these campaigns will be rolling out to more cities with increased frequency. The clock is ticking on local and Google knows it.

That clock comes in the form of the rising use of local for search and with the continued growth of the smartphone market amongst demographically pleasing consumers the race is on. Aguero confirmed that Google pegs the amount of searches that deliver local results is over 20% of the total search volume. It is important to note that a local search result is not dependent on the searcher putting a local qualifier for their search. For example, if you search for the term “pizza” without adding a town to your search the results will still be localized by Google based on factors like IP address etc. That 20% plus figure for searches is about the result set and not what a searcher enters for their inquiry.

One area that Google is not aggressively marketing to is the agency and small consultant market and I see this as a big mistake. Let’s face it, Google is there to advance Google’s business so the local SMB often relies on local consultants to help them navigate the Internet as a whole which includes social and more. While Google may be able to educate the SMB, they won’t reach them all. Consultants have valuable relationships and if Google made their job easier then I suspect that the adoption rate of Google Places would increase much more rapidly.

Overall though, I have to admit that while I wanted to hate what Google was up to because I have been pretty harsh about anything that put the words “Google” and “marketing” together, I am impressed and very interested in this push that Google is making. It’s evidence that they recognize that you are not going to be able to automate everything and expect the masses to simply “get it”.

At this point in time of the Internet’s commercial development there are too many business owners who built their success on more traditional models. Until those owners age out and the business market is occupied by those who have lived and breathed the Internet for their lifetimes the assumption has to be that many business owners will need help in getting this. That help can’t just be forums occupied by guys looking to get clients either. SMB’s need help from the source.

How does your small business’s use of technology compare to other SMBs? A new study of small and midsized businesses’ use of IT has sought to find out. Here are some results from Cloud Computing and the Role of IT Professionals in Small- to Mid-Sized Businesses, a just-released survey of more than 500 SMB decision-makers by Zoomerang Online Surveys and Polls.

IT Workers Take on New Roles

Twenty-two percent of businesses outsource IT support to vendors, citing cost-effectiveness (52 percent) and access to better resources (26 percent) as the primary reasons for doing so.

The vast majority (78 percent) of SMBs report having in-house IT support. But, of those companies, 79 percent say their IT workers also hold other roles in the company. Sixty-seven percent are involved in daily operations; 6 percent in sales and business development; and 6 percent in customer support. Only 21 percent focus solely on IT.

The percentage of SMB IT workers who are involved in other aspects of the company is growing. Thirty percent of SMBs say their in-house IT staff’s role has evolved in the past year to include operations functions; 15 percent report their in-house IT staff has become more involved in business development; and 11 percent say the in-house IT staff has become more involved in customer support.

“More often than not, the IT role within a small or midsized business may be fulfilled by the most technology savvy employee, requiring them to juggle multiple responsibilities on top of keeping the company’s technology up and running,” says Alex Terry, General Manager of Zoomerang. “With limited resources, businesses are looking to every employee to contribute and as a result, the IT role is gradually shifting from one of support to one of support and revenue generation.”

SMB Technology Functions Well, But Not Cutting-Edge

The majority (58 percent) of respondents say their IT systems are “good” (“not the latest, but everything runs smoothly and with minimal maintenance”). Thirty-two percent describe their IT as “intermediate” (“it has its good and bad moments”). Just 4 percent call their systems “poor” to the point where it is hurting operations.

This is all good news, but on the downside, a mere 7 percent say their technology is “advanced” or ahead of the curve. With technology one area where small firms can gain competitive advantages, it’s a shame more entrepreneurs aren’t taking advantage of IT opportunities.

Are Upgrades in the Cards?

Perhaps because they’re mostly satisfied with their current technology, nearly half (44 percent) of survey respondents say they have no plans to upgrade their IT in the next 12 months.

Still, 14 percent do intend to upgrade in the next three months and 16 percent will upgrade in the next four to 12 months. Eleven percent would like to upgrade but will wait more than a year to do so, while 14 percent are uncertain when they will upgrade. Clearly, many entrepreneurs are still waiting out the uncertain economy before investing in new technology.

The key areas where those planning upgrades will invest are computers and hardware, cited by 57 percent of respondents. Next are peripherals such as phones and mobile devices (16 percent), and software (15 percent).

SMB Owners Heads Not in the Cloud

Terry notes that SMBs have traditionally been conservative when it comes to investment in technology, and today’s hot buzzword, “the cloud,” is no different. Zoomerang found that just 10 percent of SMBs have deployed cloud technologies and a whopping 72 percent of respondents don’t understand or are not familiar with the technology.

“These numbers are quite staggering given that cloud vendors are investing huge amounts of money in marketing to showcase the benefits of cloud computing,” Terry said. “This research points to the need for cloud vendors to instead educate business owners on what cloud computing means and how it is relevant to SMBs.”

Of the businesses currently not using cloud computing technologies, only 2 percent plan to deploy cloud-based solutions this year; another 20 percent are still assessing the cost and benefits of various solutions.

It’s Still a Windows World

When it comes to SMB operating systems, Windows continues to dominate. Only 5 percent of respondents use Mac OS X; just 1 percent use Linux. Overall, 91 percent use some form of Windows: 45 percent still use Windows XP, 30 percent use Windows 7 and 16 percent use Windows Vista.
